Safe and Sound

Due to the fires in Southern California (Oh noes! You know where I live!) I had packed all of my art, old and new. Looking through them, as curiosity got the better of me today, I realized that there are a few things that I never got to finish that could have turned into something rather nice. Some of which I'm a bit proud of, even if they are a few years old, so I'll be posting them along with some recent stuff. And by recent I mean stuff I've drawn since the last time I posted something... only a few months. Any real art is a bit limited as I'm keeping myself with working 5-6 days a week, two nights a week learning Japanese at a local junior college, and occasional time to spend with friends.

I got a tablet for my birthday back in June and even though I've installed it onto my laptop, I still haven't had the time to actually start testing it out. Hopefully I'll decide to take it out of it's box again and try some new stuff. If you have any tips, please let me know.

All you need is a big hammer, a roll of speedtape, and a spindle of safety wire, and you can make anything fly.

im amazed you havent used your tablet. My tablet literally changed my life. I tell people it was the best investment I've ever made in my life. Because of the extra art I was able to do because of it, and how I fell in love with working on the computer for art, I left grad school at Northwestern and decided to start my career path over as a 3D animator (tablets are practically required for the field). When I hear people have tablets and never use them, it's like hearing someone say "oh, I have a car, but I've never used it. I prefer to wait for the bus". I don't ever use the mouse anymore. There was even a period when I hadn't touched a computer mouse in over a year. I bring my tablet with me everywhere, to school every day, because I always use it with computers, even if I'm not drawing. It's a more efficient way of using my laptop to its full extent (and prevents carpal tunnel).

The tablet will take you about a week for your brain to understand how to work it, about a month to really know what you're doing, and 6 - 7 months for you to become proficient enough to use it to its best extent. It's an investment of time switching to one, but as long as you can get by the first day or two getting used to it, your computer life will never be the same.

I don't really have much of an excuse for why I didn't use the tablet once I got it, but recently I really haven't had the time. I did however get the chance to try it out about a week back and I must say that it's a blast. I can imagine that it'll take some time getting used to, but I'm sure I'll cope. I've been telling myself that I should carry my sketchbook around with me wherever I go... maybe I should make the tablet a part of that future habit.

I think the first thing I need to do is organize my room so that I have space for a chair for my desk. I think a hard surface (like my unused desk) is better than just holding the tablet while my laptop sits on my lap. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear/read them! ^_^

oh, I lie down on my stomach on my bed whenever im on my laptop... so my bed acts as the desk for me, laptop, and tablet. I often draw while lying on the floor too. Tables are ok, sure, but I dunno, my drawing chi flows better when I'm on mah bellah.

It sounds like a good idea... though I don't think I could stay in that position for too long, the back starts acting up. (omg I sound like an old fart TT_TT) I should try that though, sometimes my better drawings come from when I'm on my tummy.
